Mariana Archipelago: Habitat and Ecosystem
Many near-shore
reefs on Guam have been degraded by natural and human impacts, especially
sedimentation, tourism and overharvesting. The reefs on Guam’s offshore
banks and coral reef fisheries in the CNMI appear to be generally in
good condition.
The Mariana
Archipelago Regional Ecosystem Advisory Committee on Guam has made recommendations
on a variety of non-fishing impacts, such as limited coastal access,
marine protected areas, water quality, tourism, overdevelopment and
military buildup. The
relocation of about 8,000 military personnel and their families from
Okinawa to Guam along with 12,000 to 15,000 construction workers will
have a significant impact on the ecosystem. Increased military training
will likely occur in the CNMI as part of the military realignment.
